The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and many of its allies served notice Oct. 29 that they will sue the Environmental Protection Agency in 60 days to hold it accountable for the failure of efforts to restore the bay ecosystem by 2010. The lawsuit will seek to make the agency act to restore the nation's largest estuarine ecosystem by 2015. The Chesapeake Bay watershed covers 60,000 square miles spread over parts of six states, ranging from Coo-perstown, N.Y., to near Virginia's border with North Carolina. The watershed is home to millions of people and thousands of farms. Efforts to address the introduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants into the bay's ecosystem have been under way since 1976. "Over the last 25 years Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts have been littered with promises broken and commitments unfulfilled," CBF President William C. Baker said. EPA and the bay states formed the Chesapeake Bay Program in 1983 to spearhead bay restoration efforts. CBF is one of many bay program partners.
