Climate change already has helped degrade the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and stands to change it even further over the next 100 years, according to a Chesapeake Bay Program report released Oct. 27. Just how much the estuary will change in this century will depend on many natural, human, and government factors. Scientists advising the federal-state bay program urged planners to immediately consider climate change in their restoration planning efforts. The Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee to the bay program recommended that it "take immediate action to develop new approaches to ensure that restoration strategies and policies remain effective under changing climatic conditions."
