Revealed preference approaches to non market valuation of recreation, environmental quality and health have been widely accepted by economists for decades. However, often the empirical methods preceded the theory, leading to concerns about whether these empirical methods really delivered legitimate measures of economic welfare. In this book, Bockstael and McConnell concisely synthesize the economic principles that must be followed for revealed preference methods to yield valid welfare measures. Their book guides the applied economist through the subtleties of consumer demand theory applied to quality changes that must be adhered to in empirical work in order for the resulting benefit measures to have the intended tie to utility. In this sense, reading this book is a reminder to many of us (the reviewer included) of what we learned in our Ph.D. program and sometimes forget as we undertake our latest empirical study.
