On one level, climate change consulting piggybacks on the kinds of services environmental consultants have been providing to their clients for quite some time. Industrial companies have long sought outside help in improving operating efficiencies, including energy use, and reducing emissions of substances regulated under the Clean Air Act (CAA), such as nitrogen oxides (NO_x), sulfur dioxide (SO_2), mercury, air toxics, and others. Carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions are not yet regulated, but hardly anyone believes they won't be at some point. CO_2 is quickly being added to the list of emissions to control, and a multitude of players in the air quality game are ready to help out.rnOn another level, global warming is a game-changing phenomenon that stands to reverberate throughout all facets of the global economy. Industries and entities well beyond the heavy emitters and the CAA-regulated community, as well as federal, state, and local agencies and citizen groups, are demanding scientific, technical, regulatory, economic, risk analysis, communications, and other forms of assistance to find out where they stand in a carbon-constrained world- in terms of both limiting any potential economic damage and taking advantage of economic opportunity.
