Building an emotional connection to nature is a key way to instil a desire to protect it (Borja et al. 2020)4. After all, we protect what we love, and we love what we know. What better place to connect to the marine environment than the Maldives, a tropical island nation where most people live less than 1km (0.6 miles) from the sea? The Maldivian Manta Ray Project (MMRP) is the founding project of the Manta Trust, an international manta ray conservation organisation. The MMRP's marine education programme, 'Moodhu Madharusaa' or 'Ocean School', was conceived in 2015.
