Geographical education is indispensable to the development of responsible and active citizens in the present and future world. International Geographical Union, International Charter on Geographical Education. (1995, p1) Overview of Geography Curricula In New South Wales, Geography is integrated within Human Society and its Environment kindergarten to Year 6 (Board of Studies, 1998); it is an elective as well as a mandatory subject in Years 7-10 (Board of Studies, 1998, 2003); and it is an elective subject in Years 11-12 (Board of Studies, 1999). Geography is tested in a two-hour external School Certificate (SC), Australian History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship Test, at the end of Year 10. In the Australian Geography, Civics and Citizenship section of the test, questions in 2006 will be drawn from Focus Area 5A3: Issues in Australian Environments; Focus Area 5A4: Australia in Its Regional and Global Contexts; and Geographical Tools and Skills (Geography Syllabus, 2003: 18-21). At the end of Year 12 students complete a three-hour external Higher School Examination (HSC) in 2 unit Geography covering: three extended responses on Ecosystems at Risk, Urban Places and People and Economic Activity; and short responses and multiple choice exercises on Geographic tools (maps, graphs, photographs) related to stimulus material. These marks can contribute to entrance into university courses.
