When viewed quantitatively, the declining numbers of students enrolled in senior years Geography paints a grim picture of the status and health of Geography in Victorian schools. However, this has to be viewed in the context of a curriculum that provides students with increasing and abundant choice, and specifically an increase in subjects with a perceived vocational orientation. Happily those that chose Geography are engaged in the discipline. An increase in tertiary courses prescribing Geography as a recommended study or prerequisite for entry would assist in illustrating the value of studying the subject. Geography is foundational in the compulsory years of post-primary education and this has been confirmed in the new VELS framework for Victoria cementing Geography's place in the Victorian curriculum. Educational reform has brought outcomes-based education, a failed attempt to create a national curriculum, push for civics and citizenship, values education, standards, to name a few of the policy directions that challenge geographic educators to reassess and respond to the importance and nature of Geography in schools in Victoria. The Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria (GTAV) continues to provide strong support for Geography teachers offering professional development consultancy and referral, curriculum materials, advocacy and access to a specialist geographic education library for over 600 members.
