'O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us To see ourselves as others see us' (Robert Burns - Scottish Poet). Some thoughts following a visit to Glasgow for the 2004 IGU Commission on Geographical Education Symposium
One of the privileges of academic life is the chance to visit far flung parts of the world, and for those of us who live in Australia and the United States, this frequently involves long haul air travel! While professional reading is a rare luxury during 'normal work times', having eight hours or so of sitting in a more or less comfortable seat, with few distractions other than regular meals provides some wonderful opportunities to read in areas not usually accessed, and we have often found that interest, inspiration and innovation of relevance to our work in geographical education have often stemmed from these periods.
