In Nature Displaced, Nature Displayed, Nuala C. Johnson uses a series of detailed, well-written portraits of key gardens in the UK and Ireland to underscore the point that horticulture is not "just or even primarily, an intellectual activity," but rather an accumulated set of cultural practices designed to produce "spaces where plants will thrive, thrill, and tutor" visitors. In this sense, Johnson writes, gardens are dynamic venues for playing out complex relationships between the pursuit of science and the aesthetic display of nature (p.2).
