The article by Thiriet ("In the Spotlight - The Welfare of Introduced Wild Animals in Australia" (2007) 24 EPLJ 417) examines the animal welfare dimensions of invasive animal control programs in Australia, focusing on current policy and legislative framework. Although the author should be praised for progressing the discussion of what is a difficult but very important issue, there are some assertions made in the article that are either incorrect, misleading or are not supported by the scientific literature. We would like to address our points of contention and suggest that the Thiriet article is a precis of the author's opinion rather than a balanced review (legal, scientific or otherwise) of current approaches to animal welfare in the management of invasive animals.
