This article reviews the development of planning law concerning environmental impact assessment in the United Kingdom. It describes the agencies involved andrnthe regulatory framework underlying such assessments. The procedures required are discussed, along with the underlying concept of sustainable development. The technical process involved in undertaking an environmental impact assessment is described in detail.
