What Roles Are Terrestrial Plants Playing in Global Microplastic Cycling?

Microplastic pollution has become a worldwide environmental problem, resulting in adverse effects on many organisms. Environmental sources of microplastics include textiles, tire-wear, plastics production, and incineration and waste disposal. Research on microplastic pollution has primarily focused on aquatic environments, from ocean to fresh water systems.1 More recently, airborne microplastics have attracted attention. Airborne microplastics can undergo long-range transport and become important sources of marine microplastics.2 Airborne microplastics are also increasingly being recognized as posing a threat to human health. From a recent statistical study, the human consumption of microplastics from air accounted for a large proportion of an individual's daily exposure to microplastics. Research studies focused on airborne microplastics are scarce, however, compared to studies on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The factors governing the patterns of distribution of airborne microplastics are not well described or understood. An imperative first step is to quantify the sources, fluxes, and sinks of airborne microplastics to better understand the behavior of airborne microplastics and potential risks to human health.
