摘要

Iapplaud the call of my colleagues Marc A. Edwards and Amy Pruden in "The Flint Water Crisis: Overturning the Research Paradigm to Advance Science and Defend Public Welfare" (10.1021/acs.est.6b03573) for science that promotes the social good. Communities across the country are in dire need of such science. Edwards and I, together with others, have spent the last 10 years exposing problems of lead in water both in my city, Washington, DC, and nationally. I am an anthropologist, cofounder of Virginia Tech's graduate class "Engineering Ethics and the Public," and principal creator of the ethnographic listening module that the coauthors present as the foundation of their Flint intervention and cornerstone of their proposed bottom-up research paradigm. I must correct a fundamental misunderstanding of the module, with clarifications critical to such a paradigm: 1. Listening to affected publics can be, and often is, important from beginning to end: In cases of environmental injustice, listening is, indeed, crucial for scoping the problem. However, as environmental health and justice advocates highlight, there are significant advantages to listening throughout scientists' engagement with communities, rather than just at the beginning. Sustained listening can bring scientists and communities into partnerships of mutual learning, decision-making, and trust. It can also create opportunities for "checks" on the effectiveness of scientists' interventions and their ability to remain attentive to the often-evolving experiences, knowledges, and goals of the publics they aim to serve.
