摘要

William Howard (Bill) Glaze will be remembered as one of the most influential figures in environmental science as the 20th century dosed and the 21st began. He was a first-rate scholar, administrator, and public servant who believed passionately that human health is inseparable from the health of the environment. His influence and passion were manifested throughout his career not only as a researcher, educator, and administrator but also as editor of the field's top journal, Environmental Science & Technology, from 1988 to 2002; as the founding chair of the Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board's Drinking Water Committee from 1989 to 1991; as the chair of EPA's full Science Advisory Board from 2001 to 2004; and as a member of various committees of the National Research Council and the U.S. Department of Energy. In 2008 Bill was designated a "Legend in Environmental Chemistry" at an American Chemical Society symposium. Another ACS symposium was held in his honor in 2009, and a special issue of ES&T was dedicated to him in 2010 (volume 44, issue 19).
