Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are a significant public health issue, and contribute to at least 23 000 deaths and at least 2 million serious illnesses in the U.S. each year. In March 2015 the White House released the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, which was developed in response to an Executive Order on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria issued by President Barack Obama. The National Action Plan addresses policy recommendations contained in a recent Report to the President on Combating Antibiotic Resistance prepared by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). The National Action Plan seeks to address the challenge of antibiotic resistance through enhanced surveillance, improved international collaborations, the development of new antibiotics, and improved antibiotic stewardship. The PCAST report defines antibiotic stewardship as "efforts to optimize the use of antibiotics" and presents strategies to improve antibiotic stewardship in human health care and animal agriculture.
