摘要

The recent boom in natural gas extraction from shale formations using high-volume hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") has created a nascent environmental research field investigating the challenges associated with wastewater management from these unconventional reservoirs. In operations using high-volume hydraulic fracturing for natural gas,thousands of cubic meters of fracturing fluid are injected into the subsurface under high pressure to fracture the shale formation and release trapped gas.
