Re cyclers continue to struggle with contaminants in electronic waste and in consumer plastics. European regulations in 2003 first established limits on how much heavy metal and other toxic compounds can remain in plastics that will be recycled into new products. ES&T's Best Policy Analysis Paper (Environ. Sci. Technol. DOI: 10.1021/es202518n) shows that recycling companies across Europe continue to collect plastics that contain flame retardants and other worrisome substances, sometimes at concentrations above the limits of the European directive, known as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances.
