We are grateful that the Viewpoint article has stimulated discussion2 and appreciate the opportunity to add some comments and clarification. Our manuscript presented the idea that wastewater analysis could give additional information to the antidoping Authorities,3 to help them get a sense of whether doping substances are being used and-if so-perhaps to gain clues as to how widespread this maybe and whether use is associated with particular parts of the sports village.
