In a recent Viewpoint Zalasiewicz and colleagues (l) discuss the merits of the term "Anthropocene," which was originally proposed by one of the authors (Crutzen) a decade ago, and how it might best be understood in geological time nomenclature. The Anthropocene describes the current interval of time distinguished by human-induced changes at the global scale, in particular biosphere species extinctions linked to alterations in the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Although the general application of the Anthropocene is yet to be agreed upon by geologists, the concept has been picked up across the sciences as a useful term for referring to the current age of complex global changes in which humans take an active part.
