As this issue's cover Feature by MacLeod et al. reminds, modeling is a mainstay in the environmental sciences and engineering (Environ. Sci. Technol. DOI 10.1021/esl00968w). Models can simplify complex systems or get a handle on how complexity lurks in the guise of simplicity. They can permit experimental manipulation that might be too expensive, too time-consuming, too unethical, or too materially prohibitive to undertake. As environmental change unfolds, modeling the past and the now can at least hint to the future. And in so doing, the goal to learn from the previous can feed back into models anew and ratchet toward a good sense of that future, if not necessarily a good future. Thus models provide an ability to turn intangible numbers into solid plans.
