Ever since the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed by former president Richard Nixon in 1970, the business community and its allies have been engaged in a battle to roll back requirements for environmental impact assessments in the name ofrnsaving time and money. Now that the world is facing both climate and economic crises, supporters of low-carbon energy sources-including President Barack Obama and representatives of the wind and solar energy industries-are urging that renewable energy projects be fast-tracked to cut greenhouse gases and put people back to work. This new-sprung strategy leaves others warning that the rush to build renewablernenergy facilities is already creating potentially irreversible mistakes.
