As the automotive industry readies itself to churn out new test models of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), scientists are trying to figure out just how environmentally friendly these automobiles are. Now, a new study in ES&T (pprn1185-1190) corroborates previous findings that PHEVs can significantly reduce CO_2 emissions compared with conventional vehicles. However, the results also show that if PHEVs were to fully penetrate today's fleet, the ultimate energy savings and reductions in emissions would depend on the fuel economy of the vehicles they replace.
