Climate change could lead to more deaths from smog-laden air, especially in California, according to new research from Stanford University. Rising levels of CO2 lead to warmer, wetter conditions, the study says, which make the atmosphere ripe for the creation of smog-forming ozone, particles, and carcinogens.rnThe study estimates that rising CO_2 levels could lead to 1000 additional deaths per year in the U.S. for each degree Celsius of warming, with about one-third of those in California. That's in addition to about 100,000 air-pollution-related deaths per year currently inrnthe U.S. Worldwide, each degree of warming could cause as many as 20,000 additional deaths per year from respiratory illness and cancer.
