Finding Styrofoam in disposable cups, fast-food containers, and packaging material may be harder than it was a decade ago, but the synthetic polymer, which is also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS), is still widely used. Many of these lightweight foam products bear the #6 recycling stamp, but the vast majority of EPS that ends up in U.S. municipal solid waste isn't recycled," says Gene Jones, executive director of the Southern Waste Information Exchange (SWIX), a nonprofit organization aimed at facilitating the exchange of recyclable wastes between businesses and municipalities.
