When Hurricane Katrina's flood-waters receded,they left behind a chocolate-malt-like coating of sediment and sludge on the yards,homes,and cars of New Orleans.Research published in this issue of ES&T (pp 468-474) provides one of the first peer-reviewed analyses of contaminants in the sediment;it is based on samples taken just 2 weeks after Katrina's August 29 strike.
