Doubling the budget for environmental science and technology research in the Department of Energy's national laboratories was among recommendations of a DOE advisory task force released Feb. 1. The Task Force on Alternative Futures for the DOE National Laboratories said $400 million now "with a ramp-up over time to twice that sum" was needed for the labs to serve their proper role in environmental research. The labs "are really the only organizations that can pursue the large-scale basic research and development so badly needed to replace those conventional approaches that blight much of the current [environmental management] program," according to the Galvin Report, named for task force chairman Robert Galvin of the Motorola Corporation.
