The gasoline additive methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has been detected in shallow groundwater in a number of urban centers, announced researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program in April. The findings have raised concerns that the ether may enter drinking-water sources and pose a health risk. EPA classifies MTBE as a possible human carcinogen and has placed the additive on its priority list for future regulation in drinking water. Researchers detected MTBE during a 1993-94,16-state survey for 60 volatile organic compounds in groundwater drawn from shallow wells. In the final analysis, chloroform and MTBE were the two most frequently detected volatile organics in the eight urban areas sampled.
