An analysis of Heintz et al. [1] demonstrates that their data do not support the conclusion that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aqueous extracts of a very weathered crude oil are toxic to early fish life stages at 1 μg/L total PAH (TPAH) levels. Our review was undertaken because of the far-reaching water quality regulatory implications of this conclusion. Heintz et al. based this conclusion on the results of a single, unre-plicated toxicity test treatment with a very weathered oil (VWO) and pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) embryos and alevins. A similar VWO treatment was part of a later study, but the results were not published [2]. Exposure media for the approximately 200-d flowthrough tests were prepared by pushing water up continuously through vertical columns containing gravel coated with a single VWO dose of Prudhoe Bay crude oil (PBCO) or different amounts (doses) of an artificially weathered oil (AWO) PBCO.
