Evidence suggests that hurricanes are increasing in intensity, probably as a result of rising sea surface temperatures [1]. These changes have important consequences for society; the direct economic costs of hurricanes are highest when intensity exceeds 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Indirect effects of hurricanes on environmental goods and services are extremely difficult to assess [2,3]. However, hurricane damage to the environment can be significant over large spatial and temporal scales [4].
