The global vision of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) seeks to establish the Society as a true scientific leader worldwide, and we are exploring a number of promising opportunities in pursuit of this objective. Becoming a strong scientific contributor to the global Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a natural goal for SETAC, one that offers clear benefits and interesting challenges to the Society and to its members. The SAICM story began in 1992, when the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, called for environmentally sound management of toxic chemicals. The strategic approach was mandated by the United Nations Environment Program and endorsed by the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. Adopted by the first International Conference on Chemicals Management in 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, SAICM is an international policy framework with the goal of achieving significant improvement in the management and handling of chemicals around the world by 2020. The SAICM global action plan sets out a broad range of activities. Among them is a focused program of international meetings, capacity building in developing countries, and a look at ways to complement both the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants and the Rotterdam Convention on the control of hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade by addressing emerging issues related to chemicals management.
