摘要

'One of the premises of this book is to take a look at the problem of medical errors and hospital acquired infections not necessarily from a clinical perspective but from a social science and political framework' (p. 4) and it does just that. When the authors are discussing the delivery of healthcare and the things that can go wrong they do include an explanation of diseases and how they are transmitted; therefore, you do not have to be a healthcare professional to understand the content. For those who are obsessed with numbers there are plenty of statistics, predominantly from America, although Canada, British Columbia and the United Kingdom are also cited. The author tells the reader that 'the statistics put forth are both alarming and inaccurate'. They say that medical errors are severely under-reported in a fear-based culture, which they go on to discuss at length. The book begins with discussing medical errors and hospital-acquired infections, which is what the reader would expect; however, part way through a chapter about diseases such as clostridium difficile and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, it suddenly starts talking about falls, which was rather confusing. There are a total of 19 chapters in the book, however, they could be broken down further to include: infection control, working conditions, error, a blame and shame culture, and bariatrics or, as the authors refer to them, as a 'special population as well as some political views'. Indeed, the writers are not afraid to blame government and lack of funding for the inability to sufficiently reduce medical errors and hospital-acquired infections.
