The principle of a 'change in urban paradigm', as is being claimed these days by the majority of professionals and decision-makers, is an understandable call for a renewal of urban planning practices. These have actually been reinventing themselves for more than twenty years around the notions of global approach, transversality, movement, respect for context and governance.'After a long detour via strategy, the urban planner will then come back to his first profession, which is that of creating cities. The urban planner, fed on economy, sociology and forecasting, will have met the urban designer again.' An essay by Jean Haeentjes, economist and urban planner.
