Different Ecological Indicators Used In A Re-colonization Field Study Of Benthic Communities And Its Compliance With Ecosystem Theories

The study was carried out in an intertidal flat after ecological engineering at the west end of Chongming Island, Yangtze River, China in January 2006. Succession plots had been disturbed by the ecological engineering, which had also led to the damage of the benthic communities. Through a re-colonization field study three questions were examined: Ⅰ. What do different ecological indicators display during the process of recovery? Ⅱ. What will grow first during community succession? Ⅲ. Can the different ecological indicators help in distinguishing the three proposed forms of growth: biomass, network, and information, throughout re-colonization? Multivariate analysis was used to examine the convergence of the disturbed plots with the surrounding community during recovery. Shannon-Wiener Index, Margalef Index, Pielou Evenness, Eco-Exergy and Specific Eco-Exergy were used to characterize the state of the community during the recovery process. The results showed that species richness increased rapidly and that species composition was similar in disturbed and undisturbed areas. After 1 month, diversity was consistently higher in the community undertaking recovery. Eco-Exergy and Specific Eco-Exergy provided useful information about the structural development of the community but lacked discriminating power with regard to the informational status of the system.
