摘要

Steven Vogel's Thinking like a Mall, which continues themes developed in his previous work Against Nature: The Concept of Nature in Critical Theory (SUNY Press, 1996), is clearly intended to provoke. His title takes one of the foundational passages of modern environmental writing, Aldo Leopold's famous exhortation to 'think like a mountain,'and contorts it to assert that we should instead be learning to 'think like a mall.'Vogel has taken as his theoretical centerpiece, it seems for no apparent reason than to theorize from an extreme position, those most disconcertingly sterile of structures which for many symbolize the excesses of a high-consumption way of life which is quickly rendering the planet uninhabitable for a plethora of species.
