David Naguib Pellow demonstrates his impressive scholarship of environmental justice and social movements in his latest work, Total Liberation. Exhaustive in its breadth of research and perspective, this book presents a rich account of the animal and Earth liberation movements, highlighting their interconnections and schisms. It also introduces a fascinating new paradigm: total liberation. Through a discussion of social movements and their origins, Pellow considers the organizations and efforts that are already in action to shift the tides of environmental degradation. He contends that support for total liberation stems from continued and increased threats to 'planetary sus-tainability'; the destruction of nonhuman species through industrial agriculture, pharmaceutical, medical, and chemical testing, and entertainment; and frustration with the'elitism, racism, and tactical reformism of mainstream animal rights and environmental movements.'
