The goal of reducing dependence on imported energy from Russia, the Middle East and elsewhere into the EU, essential for a sustainable future and in reducing its annual energy import bill of €350 billion, relies on capacity building and sustainable consumption. Energy independence, one component of the EU's 2030 and 2050 Energy Strategies, as well as its Energy Security Strategy, is arguably inseparable from the EU's related economic goal of achieving a liberalized and competitive energy market, crucial for both energy needs identified by the European Commission's energy union policy, and in achieving free trade as a fundamental pillar of the EU's internal market. As EU policymakers seek comprehensive strategies to achieve these goals, this timely contribution builds on existing literature and its own findings to present detailed options from legal, economic and policy standpoints, and explains the advantages and limitations of each. Unlike many other references in this area, this is an especially practical and prescriptive book, proposing solutions, informed options and recommendations rather than simply explaining an issue or observing criticisms. It's well-researched and formulaic style makes it an especially useful aide, though the theoretical bases for its proposals can always be challenged with differing viewpoints. It will be a useful read for policy-makers (particularly given its balanced prescriptive approach), academics in the field of law, economics and energy policy, students and particularly postgraduate energy studies students, as well as legal practitioners.
