Against 'Delicious Despotism' in the World of Copyright: On the online publication in Spanish of Manual alternativo sobre las leyes nacionales y normativas internacionales sobre el derecho de autor en el Sur global: dieciocho preguntas y respuestas (An alternative primer on national and international copyright law in the global South: eighteen questions and answers)
Some time ago I was powerfully struck by the realisation that a comic strip could offer a very accurate explanation of how the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) operated. I personally believed that these were institutions which could only be studied academically by analysing bibliographical resources. Months later, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, we witnessed the demise of the FTAA essentially due to the mass mobilisation of those who were critical of its proposed creation. I heard desperately poor peasants speak about patents, unfair exchanges and the bankruptcy of national producers due to the subsidies given to agriculture by governments in developed countries. Before my very eyes, I saw how life supported the authors of those comic strips and I learned a profound lesson.
