摘要

The premise of this book is that mobile communication in developed societies has 'disappeared' because of its very prevalence. It has become taken for granted because it is ubiquitous. Is not to have your smartphone with you (assuming that you own one), as Elliott and Urry claim, to be 'walking blind'? The problem with such ways of putting things, as Ling points out, is that it suggests that before we had mobile phones, we had no sense of sight and that now we have perfect vision. While smartphones can indeed supply us with just-in-time information, they can also distract us from the matter in hand, and to suggest that they simply augment our experience is surely a far too simplistic way of thinking about mobile communication. Capturing the complexity of mobile phone use and its implications for agency and social life is a challenging undertaking.
