This handbook on Habermas is the latest addition to Pluto's admirable series on Modern European Thinkers. Luke Goode sets out to show how Habermas's concept of the public sphere is an integral component of his whole intellectual career; to focus particularly on problems connected with democracy, communication and citizenship, which of course are central to Habermas's concerns; and to look at ways in which the idea of the public sphere may be taken forward. This threefold raft of intentions works well and helps provide coherence to Goode's discussion. He begins with an examination of The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere and critical responses to it before moving on to subsequent developments in Habermas's thinking on the public sphere. Goode then turns to the role of the media in the discourse of the public sphere. He foregrounds the issue of mediation, which for him should be critically embraced by the public sphere framework. Goode finishes the book with a chapter on the concept of reflexivity, which he argues should be at the core of a 'politics of the public sphere', the main reason for this being that it problematizes 'once unquestioned values and institutions' and leads to 'demands for new ways of managing contradiction, conflict and difference' (p. 120). Goode offers a clear and accessible introduction to the concept of the public sphere that students so far unfamiliar with Habermas's work will find a helpful guide.
