Computer Simulation of Mould Filling for Horizontal Castings and Its Experimental Validation

The literature concerning mould filling is reviewed. The research previously carried out by the present authors for vertical plate castings is summarized. Experimental test data on mould filling are compared with simulations based on a three-dimensional computer code which has been developed at WTCM Foundry Centre. This program allows to calculate the metal flow, the location of the free surface and the heat transport during mould filling and solidification. The flow behaviour in 4 mm thick horizontal plate castings with or without a filter has been studied. When a filter is placed in the gating system, impurities are removed from the liquid metal and laminar flow conditions are created in the downstream filter. Both phenomena influence the filling pattern in the horizontal plate casting. The effect of the filter on mould filling can be simulated by applying the Darcy equation and by modifying the viscosity values of the liquid metal downstream and upstream with respect to the filter position. The average experimental mould filling sequence can be used for validating the computer code.
