Navigation has its principal objective to manage the movement of people and goods as efficiently and safely as possible. Efficiency can be thought of as a measure of movement levels relative to the objectives for a particular transportation system and the finances required for its operation. Safety, the management of traffic to reduce or eliminate accidents, is the other critical reason for navigational control. The dual objectives, however, frequently conflict or, at least, compete. For example, in the marine navigation to avoid obstacles generally vessels take a longer passage to be far from static or dynamic obstacles, where the distance cost and the fuel consumption cost have to be sacrificed. These two parameters should be rightly handled for safe and efficient navigation situations. An airline pilot needs to be warned of high winds at the destination airport just as an automobile driver needs to be warned of a dangerous curve or intersection ahead similarly an marine vessels needs to be warned in case of uncertain weather conditions and status of the other ships. Efficient electronic devices or signals, particularly communication devices, are used instead to guide the vehicle and operator in case of air and marine navigation. Control of ships at sea and their ability to avoid potential collisions are a source of primary concern for marine safety. Because the guideway for a ship is water, there are limited frictional forces available to hold a ship on course. Laws of physics demonstrate that bodies in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted upon by outside forces. Present work targets on methods and procedures that will rightly satisfy both the measures and describe current situation in the marine navigational approaches and problems related to it. The results of a two months situation analyses will be represented in the paper. Especially the effects of dense transit traffic and ferry's time schedule in different correlations are focused. There will be highlighted some distinct ferry passage profiles which are wide influenced by navigational conditions. Different problem types in the navigation passage will be discussed and analysed. Important concept of the work also deals with the solutions to crossing the ferries in the traffic lanes which is very often a contradiction to the normal sailing conditions in certain routes along the coasts. Solutions will be given for the robust path planning methods including a collision assessment technique for dynamic routing assistance.
