In this paper I have tried to support the historically sound awareness that before and during the fascist regime many Italian intellectuals were not of neo-idealistic orientation, making it seem as if they were ideologically compromised with the regime. I also tried to show that Bottazzi and Rignano fully and authoritatively participated in the international debate focused on the epistemological aspects of scientific explanation in natural and biomedical sciences. Any honest evaluation of Bottazzi's liaison dangereuse with the political institutions during the fascist regime should be based on the historical awareness that the rhetorical celebration of the 'spirit or genius of the Italian race', so widespread in the fascist era, was deeply rooted in a general intellectual attitude formerly shared by catholic, Jewish and/or liberal thinkers.
