摘要

At school I already learned that in the past many cities emerged at strategic locations, like river banks, coasts and valleys. What would Budapest be without the Danube, Marseille without the Mediterranean Sea and Innsbruck without its nearby mountains? Strangely enough, these landscape factors are often neglected in modern urban studies. In the book The Rooted City/De Gewortelde Stad- the book is bilingual, both in English and in Dutch - the authors intend to fill this gap by focussing on the intricate interplay between European cities and their landscape. As the authors see it, the growing urbanisation in the world makes this topic increasingly relevant. Cities become bigger and more complex, which makes them also more vulnerable. How to guarantee the supply of sufficient food, water and energy for a growing urban population? And how to safeguard city residents from the adverse effects of climate change? In providing for basic urban needs, the landscape surrounding cities is mostly of great importance. In chapter 1 of the book the authors even claim that 'If cities fail to do justice to the landscape, they will run into problems' (p. 14).
