The European Commission is expected to initiate, on 23 January, infringement pro- ceedings against Germany for letting new Mercedes models that were not equipped with the new EU-registered coolant onto the market, says a Community source. Daimler, the German Mercedes-Benz manufacturer, refused to comply with EU regulation (Directive 2006/40/EC - also known as the MAC Directive), which forces all manufacturers - from 1 January 2013 - to make their air conditioning systems in their new cars compatible with R1234yf, a refrigerant gas that does not pollute as much as its predecessor.
