摘要

German and Greek shipowners, who still send around 80% of their end-of-life vessels to beaches in South-East Asia for dismantling, are named and shamed as Europe's worst ship 'dumpers' in a list drawn up by Shipbreaking Platform, an NGO combating dirty and dangerous shipbreaking practices worldwide. The list, published on 3 February, shows that of the 1,213 large ocean-going vessels scrapped in 2013, 645 were sold to substandard beaching facilities in Asia that do not comply with environmental or safety standards. Around 40% of the ships were EU-owned. This unacceptable practice is now banned by the entry into force, on 30 December 2013, of Regulation (EU) 1257/2013 on ship recycling.
