Crime linked to wildlife is an old and very profitable activity. However, prosecutions are rare, and sanctions are often weak or non-existent. Given the scale of the problem, the European Commission has now decided to consider ways of fighting this plague more effectively. With this goal in mind, it published, on 7 February, a communication on 'The EU approach to combat wildlife trafficking, and launched a public consultation to identify the most appropriate means of enhancing its action in this area.
