Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn announced, on 10 February, that the European Commission will launch a public consultation on a future strategy for the Alps in July. The Alps regions have for years been pressing for a macroregional strategy like the one put in place for the Danube and Baltic areas (and soon the Adriatic-Ionian area). Their message reached the European Council, which last December officially called for such a strategy, setting a deadline of June 2015. So the machinery is in motion.
