With the UK leaving the opposition camp, the European Commission is closer than ever to winning the Council's support for its 2010 proposal on cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops on EU territory. According to sources, the UK - which alongside Germany and France has been opposed to the rules proposed by the Commission in July 2010 that would give member states greater freedom to restrict the cultivation of GM crops on their territory - is now ready to give its green light. A declaration to this end was made by London at the working group meeting, on 14 February. To test the waters ahead of the Environment Council, on 3 March, the Greek EU Presidency asked the national delegations to clarify their positions on the latest compromise proposal presented by the Danish EU Presidency in March 2012. The UK signalled that now it is ready to support it, a source said. With London joining the sup- porters' camp, the proposal could gain the 29 votes needed for it to pass the qualified majority threshold of 260 votes in favour.
