Improved targeting of the specific objectives of 'networks of excellence' and 'integrated projects' - two instruments of Community policy in terms of research - is essential in order to improve management and verify that the Community funds allocated to them have had the desired catalyst effect. These are the recommendations of the EU Court of Auditors to the European Commission, in a somewhat critical report on these two instruments, published on 14 October.
