Computers and specialized electronics have had a major impact on the medical profession. At the high end are computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), two noninvasive scanning techniques that depend on rapid execution of complex algorithms. CT and MRI imaging capabilities primarily are used for diagnosis and require large, expensive machines situated in a hospital or clinic and operated by experienced personnel. Many smaller, less expensive medical devices also involve computer and electronics technologies that have improved accuracy and ease of use while adding new functionality. For example, Spacelabs Healthcare develops medical products to address applications in patient monitoring, diagnostic cardiology, and anesthesia delivery.
